A Regular Sunday: Shopping and Football

CAREGIVING:  I can’t remember when we started grocery shopping on Sunday but it has been our routine for a few years at least. Sometimes we would go out for breakfast on the way for our weekly egg and homefry fix. Now we can’t really go out to eat anymore since Kathy needs so much help feeding herself. But that’s OK because I like cooking breakfast. We had a leftover sweet potato (or a yam, not sure) that I sliced and fried with some egg whites and an egg each. I decided to have her skip her shower today because her hair would be wet. She is still sick and coughing. And I can’t leave her alone in the house, so she comes with me and sits in the car while I shop. She listens to classical music on the radio while I shop. Now that the weather is colder I leave the car running so she can stay warm.

I shop at two different supermarkets. We do a lot of shopping at Stop & Shop and have our prescriptions at the drug department there. But this Sunday I went to Aldi. It is a really cheap place to get certain things if they have them. It is owned by the same company as Trader Joes, so almost everything is their own brand. Some of it is pretty good. Some of it is mediocre. Shopping there is a crap-shoot. You just never know if they will have what you need or what they had the week before. I usually stock up on stuff assuming that they won’t have it when I need it. This week they had no toothpaste at all. (But they had a special on a cordless drill.) Arriving at home I get Kathy out of the car and up the stairs before I can deal with the groceries. I leave all the food on the porch. I get her strapped into the chair lift. Then at the top of the stairs I get her over to her transport chair. Wheel her to the toilet. Then get her ready for a little nap or at least a rest on the couch. When she spends too much time sitting upright her body starts bending to one side or the other. She can’t straighten up at all. Lynn our physical therapist, suggested that she needs to lie down to rest her trunk muscles.

After a nap and after I have most of the groceries put away, we watched part of the Patriots game. (Another come-from-behind game.) We ate the last of the leftovers for lunch and finished watching the game. I’m gradually losing interest in football, I can’t really be trying to raise money for brain health and be shocked when someone ends up with a brain injury on TV.

I made “pizza” for dinner. Usually I make it from scratch or buy frozen dough but this time I tried a pre-made shell from Aldi. It was like a big cracker. Not good at all, but it was quick. After dishes and some dessert we watched another episode of Foyle’s War on our Roku. And did the meds/teeth/ pajamas routine.
